“You Are My Friends, Believe Me!”

August 5, 2017

Trump spoke at the NRA convention and the first words out of his mouth were “You are my friends, believe me.” Capitalist individualism, the term i use, has successfully created the myth that gun ownership will provide safety. Personal safety is dependent on a socially cohesive society where people are treated with respect and provided social security in the broadest sense of the word. I think it was Reuther who said that the greatest barrier to crime is a job. I believe that it is much more complex than that but I do believe that the federal government must establish a federal jobs program where every person can have work at a decent wage. That is sine qua non of a safe society. There is much more required but that program would be the foundation for building a society where gun violence would be reduced. In addition, we should have a program of strict liability on the gun manufacturers. While we would require a complete overhaul of the tax system, that is beyond this post. Suffice it to say, the present system pushed by the gun manufacturers with the NRA as their political wing, produces absolutely no personal safety. Gun deaths are fast become the biggest most gruesome mortality statistic. Fed by racism, white children under the age of 10 now become killers because guns are readily available in their households.
